FABRIC SOURCING · BUYER CHECKLIST

Fabric sourcing for clothing manufacturing in Turkey: a buyer’s approval checklist

When sourcing fabric for a custom clothing order in Turkey, begin with a written fabric specification and an approval route. A swatch can help narrow options, but the buyer should confirm the material in a finished sample and agree what must match before bulk cutting. This checklist helps brands ask useful questions without treating a fabric name as a complete specification.

Write a fabric brief before requesting options

Identify the garment and its intended use first. A structured jacket, draped dress and stretch jersey top ask different things of a material. Tell the sourcing team which properties are essential, which are preferences and which are still open for development.

Record the proposed fibre composition, knit or weave construction, target weight, width, stretch direction, hand feel, colour reference and finish where known. Add the intended care method and any test requirements set by your brand or destination market. If you have an approved reference fabric, send its supplier reference and a physical swatch rather than a photograph alone.

  • Style code and intended garment use
  • Composition, construction, weight and usable width
  • Colour standard, finish and hand-feel reference
  • Care expectations and required test plan

Compare alternatives against the same specification

Ask for each proposed fabric to be identified by supplier, article number, composition, construction and colour. Note which requirements it meets, which differ and whether it is a stock option or requires a separate production run. A similar-looking swatch may produce a different fit, drape or sewing result.

Request a sample length for the most promising option and make the intended garment in that material. Review its appearance in daylight and in the lighting in which the product will be sold. Keep notes on opacity, stretch, recovery, seam behaviour and surface finish instead of approving from hand feel alone.

Approve colour with an identifiable reference

State the colour standard and approval method in the purchase brief. If a lab dip or print strike-off is needed, label every submission with the style, colour and revision. Specify who has authority to approve it and keep the signed or dated reference accessible to the people ordering material and inspecting production.

Before bulk use, agree how shade differences within a delivery or between repeat orders will be evaluated. If multiple rolls or dye lots arrive, ask how they will be identified and allocated. Do not assume an approved small swatch guarantees an exact visual match in every subsequent lot.

Test performance on the actual garment

A material can behave differently after cutting, sewing, washing or finishing. Review dimensional change, colour transfer, pilling or other properties that matter for the style through an agreed test plan. Set the method and acceptance criteria with your product team or testing provider before treating a result as a pass.

Use the proposed production fabric in the fit or pre-production sample where practical. If the fabric changes after a sample has been approved, record whether fit, measurement, artwork or care information needs another review. This decision should be visible in the versioned product file.

Set a bulk-fabric checkpoint before cutting

The approved sample, fabric article, colour reference and order documents should point to the same material. Agree who checks incoming rolls for identification, visible faults, usable width and quantity, and how a discrepancy is reported. Keep dye-lot and roll references with the cutting record if they matter to shade consistency.

Define what happens when the ordered fabric cannot be supplied as approved: who proposes a substitute, which tests or new samples are required, and who signs off the change. A substitution should never be silently absorbed into bulk production.

Keep material claims tied to evidence

If the brief calls for organic, recycled or another documented material, ask which documents apply to the exact fabric, supplier and order. A fabric description does not, by itself, establish a certification for the finished garment. Check the permitted wording before labels, hangtags or online product copy are approved.

Konsey Textile’s private-label service describes coordination of fabric sourcing, patterns, samples, production and quality checks. Send your product brief, required fabric attributes, reference swatch, quantities by style and colour, destination and requested approval steps. The team can assess the route for that particular programme without a blanket material, minimum-order or delivery promise.

Keep a one-page fabric approval record

For a jersey top, record the proposed fabric article and colour, reference swatch, test requirements, garment sample version and the person who approved each stage. If the supplier later proposes another dye lot or construction, reopen the affected approvals before cutting.

  • Approved fabric article, composition and colour reference
  • Named reviewer for sample and bulk-lot checks
  • Written substitution and re-approval route

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

What should I send when asking a Turkish clothing manufacturer to source fabric?+

Send the garment brief, target composition and construction, colour reference, care and test requirements, quantities by style and colour, and any approved swatch or reference article.

Is a fabric swatch enough to approve production?+

A swatch helps shortlist material. Review the chosen fabric in a finished sample and agree colour, performance and bulk-lot checks before cutting.

What if the approved fabric is unavailable?+

Request a documented alternative, compare it with the original specification and decide whether a new test or garment sample is required before approving a substitution.

Does organic fabric make the finished garment certified?+

Not automatically. Check the applicable documents and supply-chain scope for the exact order before making a finished-product claim.
